The turbulent tenure of veteran Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars has come to an abrupt end after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) agreed to terminate his contract by mutual consent.
The high-profile exit came just two days after Ghana suffered a devastating 4-2 defeat to Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium in their AFCON 2027 qualifying clash. The Black Stars had built a comfortable 2-0 lead through early strikes from Ernest Nuamah and Felix Afena-Gyan. However, a sensational second-half collapse allowed Gambia to score four unanswered goals, leaving Ghana rooted to the bottom of Group C without a single point.
Following intense public backlash and emergency crisis talks, both parties decided it was best to part ways. Queiroz, 73, had only returned for his second stint in charge in September 2026, managing just one victory, two draws, and four defeats in seven matches while conceding ten goals.
In an emotional farewell statement, the former Real Madrid manager and Manchester United assistant acknowledged that results had fallen short of expectations. “Despite our best efforts, the necessary conditions were not fully in place, and our recent results also contributed to the decision to end this journey,” Queiroz shared, insisting he always prioritized the long-term interest of Ghanaian football.
The GFA thanked the veteran manager for his dedication and revealed that a roadmap regarding the national team’s technical leadership will be announced shortly.
