Dantsoho Says Federal Government’s $1 Billion Port Modernisation Project Remains on Track

Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, has affirmed that the Federal Government’s $1 billion port modernisation programme is progressing as planned, describing the initiative as a major step toward improving Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure and strengthening the nation’s position as a leading trade and logistics hub in West Africa. According to Dantsoho, the comprehensive upgrade is designed to enhance operational efficiency, expand cargo handling capacity, improve port security, and reduce vessel turnaround time across the country’s major seaports. He explained that modernising port facilities will support economic growth by facilitating faster movement of goods, lowering logistics costs, and creating a more competitive business environment for importers, exporters, and investors. The project also aims to introduce advanced technology, modern cargo-handling equipment, digital systems, and improved port infrastructure capable of meeting international standards. Dantsoho noted that efficient ports are essential to promoting international trade, attracting foreign direct investment, and supporting Nigeria’s economic diversification agenda. Maritime experts welcomed the progress, observing that improved port infrastructure could reduce congestion, increase operational productivity, strengthen customs processes, and improve the country’s ranking in global logistics performance. They added that modern ports would enhance regional trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) while creating employment opportunities across the maritime and logistics sectors. Industry stakeholders also emphasised the importance of maintaining transparency, effective project management, and timely execution to ensure the investment delivers its intended economic benefits. They stressed that collaboration among government agencies, terminal operators, shipping companies, and private investors will be critical to the programme’s long-term success. The ongoing port modernisation initiative reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to building world-class maritime infrastructure capable of supporting sustainable economic development, expanding trade, and improving Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global shipping industry.
