Ekiti 2026: INEC Reports 92% Early Opening for Polling Units, Addresses Delays in 188 Locations

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that approximately 92% of the polling units designated for the Ekiti State Governorship Election opened on time on Saturday, June 20, 2026.

While the vast majority of the 2,445 polling units across the state’s 16 Local Government Areas successfully activated and commenced the accreditation process at the scheduled 8:30 a.m. start time, the commission acknowledged experiencing logistical bottlenecks in 188 specific locations.

According to situational reports from the ground, the delays were primarily caused by early-morning transportation hitches, minor technical configurations with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines, and localized deployment challenges.

“We are tracking the situational updates in real-time. While our logistical framework successfully activated over 2,200 polling units as planned, we encountered minor friction points in 188 units. Our technical and backup teams have already intervened, and voting has since commenced in those areas.”

— INEC Official Statement

Despite the isolated opening hitches, voters across major areas like Ado-Ekiti, Ikere, and Oye reported a seamless experience with the BVAS technology, with accreditation taking less than two minutes per voter.

Furthermore, robust deployments from the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES)—alongside anti-graft officials from the EFCC and ICPC—have ensured a generally peaceful atmosphere, keeping localized thuggery and vote-buying attempts at bay. INEC has reassured voters in the delayed polling units that they will not be disenfranchised, as the voting time will be extended to compensate for the lost minutes.
