Electricity Consumers Spend N1.2 Trillion in Six Months, NERC Reports

Nigerian electricity consumers spent approximately N1.2 trillion on electricity during the first six months of the year, according to figures released by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). The reported amount highlights the significant financial burden placed on households, businesses and other electricity users amid continuing challenges within the power sector. The spending covers electricity payments made by consumers across the country during the six-month period, reflecting the large amount of money circulating within the electricity supply chain. Despite the substantial payments, many consumers continue to express concerns about unreliable power supply, estimated billing, metering challenges and the rising cost of electricity. NERC has continued to monitor the activities of electricity distribution companies and other participants in the sector as part of efforts to improve service delivery and strengthen accountability. The commission has also promoted metering initiatives aimed at reducing dependence on estimated billing and improving transparency between electricity providers and customers. Industry stakeholders have repeatedly called for increased investment in power generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure to address persistent supply challenges. They also argue that improved infrastructure, adequate funding and stronger regulatory oversight are necessary to deliver more reliable electricity to consumers. The N1.2 trillion expenditure comes at a time when Nigerian households and businesses are facing wider economic pressures, including higher operating costs and increased prices for essential goods and services. Consumers will therefore be watching closely to see whether the significant payments recorded during the period translate into improved electricity supply and better service quality across the country.
