Title-chasing Manchester United once again failed to make a statement in their title challenge as a goalless draw against a rather resurgent Arsenal on Saturday saw them drop points for a disappointing third time in four Premier League games.
Ole Gunnar’s men headed into the game off the back of an embarrassing defeat to relegation-threatened Sheffield United, and we’re looking to bounce back but failed to take their chances, with the stalemate leaving them in second place, three points behind city rivals, Manchester City who have a game at hand.
The highly-anticipated clash could have gone either way, both for good saves from both keepers and misses from each end.
United had the chance of taking the game in the closing stages of the encounter. Still, striker Edinson Cavani bottled up two good options, thereby leaving the Red Devils, who had lost to the Gunners in the first half of the season with a lone goal, no other choice but to share the spoil with and Arsenal, who no doubt deserved it.
Before the stoppage time misses, Arsenal’s keeper, Bernd Leno, had kept United at Bay with an acrobatic save in the first half.
After the break, the Gunners went close to grabbing a goal when Alexandre Lacazette’s free-kick hit the bar and United’s keeper David de Gea like his Arsenal counterpart, also rose to the occasion and out Emile Smith Rowe’s effort with a brilliant save.
The only seemingly high point to United’s game is the club record of 18 unbeaten games on the road.
It was a missed opportunity for both teams to be back in action on Tuesday as Arsenal makes a trip to Wolves, while Manchester United welcomes Southampton at Old Trafford.
