Manchester United’s hopes of catching up with their city rivals and runaway league leaders, Manchester City went down the drains on Sunday as Ole Gunnar’s men failed to get one past a resurgent Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge, settling for their own point, which now leaves them second on the log, the 12 points behind City.
The result leaves Chelsea, who remain unbeaten under new manager Thomas Tuchel, outside the top four, a point behind West Ham United.
The much-anticipated clash turned out to be a rather drab one, with the only moment worthy of note being when Ole Gunnar’s men’s appeal for a penalty
for a handball against Callum Hudson-Odoi in the first half, referee Stuart Attwell was dismissed after he was instructed to consult a pitchside monitor by the video assistant referee.
Both teams had chances to seal all three available points, but from both David de Gea and Mendy at each end of the pitch and various missed opportunities, it’s safe to say a draw was the best result for what can be referred to as a keenly contested game, despite its general lack of flair.
Manchester United – who have lost only one of their last 20 league games and are now unbeaten in 20 away league games, will travel to Crystal Palace on Wednesday for their next challenge, while defending champions, Liverpool who defeated Sheffield United 2-0, will be waiting to host Chelsea on Thursday.
