The Red Devils’ got off to a fast start took as Bruno Fernandes gave the visitors an early lead from the spot after a penalty was awarded inside the first 30 seconds when Gabriel Jesus fouled Antony Martial.
After the break, Luke Shaw doubled the lead just at the top of the hour, and that was enough to hand City their first loss since a 2-0 defeat at Tottenham on November 21.
Despite the defeat, Pep Guardiola’s side still has an 11-point lead at the top of the table, while United, who have now gone 22 leagues away games unbeaten – including 14 wins and had not scored in their previous three games, moved back into second place, a point ahead of Leicester City as the race for a place in the top four continues to pick momentum.
The Citizens will be back in league action against Southampton on Wednesday before travelling to Fulham on Saturday. At the same time, United will take on AC Milan in the Europa League last 16 first leg on Thursday and host David Moyes’ West Ham in the premier league on Sunday.
