FIFA President Gianni Infantino has condemned the chaotic scenes that marred the conclusion of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, describing the incident as unacceptable and damaging to the image of football.
The highly anticipated final, which ended in controversy, was overshadowed by disorder involving players, officials, and supporters. The disruption occurred late in the match following a contentious decision, triggering heated reactions on the pitch and unrest around the stadium.
Reacting to the incident, Infantino stressed that such behaviour has no place in football, especially on a stage as prestigious as a continental final.
He emphasized the importance of respect for match officials, adherence to the rules of the game, and maintaining discipline regardless of the pressure or emotions involved.
“The scenes witnessed during the AFCON final are unacceptable,” Infantino said, noting that football must always promote fair play, respect, and sportsmanship.
He also called on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to thoroughly investigate the incident and take appropriate disciplinary measures against those found culpable.
According to him, accountability is necessary to protect the integrity of the game and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The chaos has sparked widespread reactions across the football community, with fans and analysts debating refereeing standards, player conduct, and crowd control at major tournaments.
Despite the controversy, Infantino reiterated FIFA’s commitment to supporting African football, while urging all stakeholders to ensure that the sport’s values are upheld at every level.
The AFCON final, meant to be a celebration of African football excellence, instead ended with questions and criticism serving as a reminder of the need for discipline and professionalism in the beautiful game.
