Nigeria’s Flamingos are preparing for one of their biggest tests at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after securing a dramatic place in the semi-finals.
The Nigerian girls booked their ticket with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Venezuela, thanks to captain Azeezat Oduntan’s late penalty in the 89th minute.
It was a tense encounter, with both sides battling for a place in the last four. But the Flamingos kept pushing and eventually found the breakthrough when Oluebube Umejiaku was fouled inside the penalty area.
Oduntan stepped up and calmly converted the spot kick, sending the Nigerian bench and supporters into celebration.
The victory has earned Nigeria a semi-final meeting with Brazil, a team known for its technical quality and attacking football.
Flamingos coach Akeem Busari has received praise for the team’s resilience, while Brazil’s defensive organisation is already attracting attention ahead of the encounter.
Nigeria will need discipline, concentration and clinical finishing if they hope to reach the final.
The young players have already shown that they can handle pressure. Now, they have an opportunity to take another major step towards making history for Nigerian women’s football.
