Nigeria’s Flamingos have suffered a disappointing start to the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after losing 2-1 to Poland in their opening Group B match in Morocco on Saturday.
The young Nigerian side had hoped to begin the tournament with a positive result, but Poland proved difficult to break down and made their chances count when it mattered most.
Wiktoria Skrzypczak opened the scoring for Poland from the penalty spot in the 33rd minute, giving the European side the advantage before half-time. Nigeria needed a response after the break, but Poland strengthened their position when Natalia Skrok scored in the 65th minute to make it 2-0.
With the game slipping away, the Flamingos refused to give up. Oluebube Rumejiaku produced a fine free kick in the 79th minute to reduce the deficit and give Nigeria hope of a late comeback.
The goal lifted the Nigerian players, but Poland held firm during the closing stages to secure all three points.
Although the result is a setback, the tournament is far from over for Nigeria. The Flamingos must now regroup, address the weaknesses exposed in their opening match and prepare for their next group fixture against Puerto Rico on Tuesday.
The defeat will be frustrating for the players and supporters, particularly after the team entered the competition with hopes of making a strong impression. However, the response in the final stages showed that Nigeria still have the ability to make life difficult for their opponents.
The next match will be crucial as the Flamingos seek to revive their qualification hopes and keep their World Cup campaign alive.
For the young Nigerian stars, the message is simple: learn from the opening defeat, regain confidence and fight for the points still available.
