President Bola Tinubu has asked the Nigerian Senate to approve a fresh external borrowing plan of approximately $7.7 billion as the Federal Government seeks additional funding to finance the country’s budget deficit.
The request was presented to the Senate in a letter dated October 26, 2026, and read during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
According to the proposal, the borrowing is intended to contribute towards financing the 2026 budget deficit. The request has now been referred to the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts for further consideration.
The development is likely to generate plenty of debate, particularly as Nigerians continue to demand better living conditions, improved infrastructure, job opportunities and stronger public services.
While the government will have to explain how the proposed funds will be used, citizens will also want clear answers about repayment obligations and the long-term impact on national debt.
For many Nigerians, the biggest concern is not just how much the country borrows, but whether borrowed money will translate into visible improvements in everyday life.
The Senate’s decision will therefore be closely watched as the borrowing proposal moves through the legislative process.
