The University of Lagos (UNILAG) is officially opening the doors to its futuristic AI UniPod today, Thursday, March 12, 2026. This “Open House” event, running from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, allows registered students and staff to tour a facility designed to turn the Akoka campus into a continental powerhouse for artificial intelligence and product innovation.
The project is a strategic collaboration between UNILAG and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) under the “Timbuktoo” initiative. While several UniPods exist across Africa, UNILAG’s hub is specifically themed around Artificial Intelligence, making it a unique laboratory for the next generation of Nigerian tech leaders.
What’s Inside the UniPod? The facility is far more than just a computer lab; it is a “maker space” designed for end-to-end product development:
- Advanced Labs: Dedicated spaces for Artificial Intelligence research and a specialized Design Lab & Studio.
- Prototyping Tools: The hub is equipped with high-end robotics components, PCD printers, Resin and 3D printers, and a CO₂ laser machine for precision cutting and engraving.
- Entrepreneurship Zones: A “Pitch Garage” for students to present ideas to investors, along with collaborative co-working areas and exhibition spaces.
- Communal Design: Architecturally, the space is designed to blend African heritage (including local plants and artwork) with high-tech functionality.
Speaking ahead of the open day, the Provost of the College of Medicine, Professor Ademola Oremosu (representing Vice-Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola), described the hub as a “catalyst for groundbreaking innovation.” He noted that the facility will allow students to move beyond theoretical research and actually build indigenous solutions to Nigeria’s local challenges.
This launch follows a series of major tech wins for UNILAG, including the recent announcement of Africa’s first OpenAI Academy on the campus. If you are a student or staff member planning to visit today, ensure you have registered via the official university portal, as access is strictly limited to registered participants.
