“Frying Won’t Kill the Toxins”: LASCOPA Warns Against Lethal Fungal Poisoning From Rotten Tomatoes

The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), has issued an urgent public health advisory strongly warning residents against the purchase and consumption of spoiled or fungus-infested tomatoes, popularly known locally as “Ata Esha” or “Esha.” The critical food safety alert comes amidst a sharp spike in the market price of fresh tomatoes, which has unfortunately driven many residents and commercial food vendors to opt for cheaper, degraded alternatives.

In an official public statement released on Sunday, May 17, 2026, the agency emphasized that consuming these rotten tomatoes poses a severe and potentially life-threatening health hazard. Authorities clarified that Ata Esha is heavily contaminated with toxic microorganisms, specifically deadly molds and lethal fungal strains that produce harmful mycotoxins. Health officials warned that these toxins cannot be destroyed by washing, boiling, or frying. Ingesting them can trigger severe food poisoning, chronic gastrointestinal complications, and in severe instances, progressive liver and kidney damage.

LASCOPA urged Lagosians to prioritize their well-being by thoroughly inspecting produce before buying and entirely boycotting visibly damaged, moldy, or mushy tomatoes. The agency also sent a stern warning to market traders and local food handlers, stating that distributing or selling contaminated food items to the public violates state consumer safety laws and will attract strict regulatory penalties.
