Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has sent a strong warning to politicians and their supporters, urging them to avoid violence, hate speech and divisive activities as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
The governor said political competition should be based on ideas, policies and development plans rather than intimidation and confrontation.
His warning followed remarks made during a burial ceremony in Buruku Local Government Area on Saturday. According to a statement from his Chief Press Secretary, Alia expressed concern about the use of inflammatory language and violence by political actors pursuing their ambitions.
He urged politicians to conduct their campaigns with maturity and respect, warning that political disagreements should never be allowed to threaten the peace and security of communities.
The governor also called on residents to assess political leaders based on their performance and the issues affecting their welfare.
His intervention comes amid growing concerns about political violence in different parts of the country, including the deadly incident that disrupted an opposition rally in Delta State.
With campaigns gaining momentum, Alia’s message is a reminder that the 2027 election should be a contest of ideas rather than a battle that puts innocent citizens at risk.
