Popular Nigerian entertainer and OAP Peter Ogbudu, known as “MC Gana,” has sparked intense online debate after canceling his birthday celebrations in protest of the nation’s severe economic and security crises.
In an emotional open letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday, May 28, 2026, Gana stated that cutting cakes feels entirely inappropriate while millions face severe socioeconomic hardship.
“I can’t celebrate while Nigerians suffer,” Gana wrote. “It would feel entirely wrong to mark my birthday with fanfare while millions struggle daily… Nigerians are not lazy; they are simply exhausted.”
Gana’s letter highlighted the crushing daily realities confronting citizens following recent federal policy shifts, such as the removal of the fuel subsidy:
- Skyrocketing Inflation: A standard bag of rice has surged past ₦70,000, placing basic food security out of reach.
- Transit Burden: Public transportation fares have doubled or tripled nationwide, heavily impacting daily trade.
- Micro-Business Collapse: Small enterprises are folding under skyrocketing diesel prices and an erratic national power grid.
- Existential Insecurity: Northern and Middle Belt farmers are fleeing ancestral lands due to relentless bandit raids, crippling local agriculture.
Gana urged the presidency to move past theoretical policies and implement direct agricultural interventions, subsidized transit models, and community-based policing to protect agrarian settlements.
The presidency has not yet responded. Meanwhile, digital spaces are heavily polarized. While thousands of citizens praise Gana for using his platform to voice raw grassroots pain, critics argue that skipping a personal birthday does little to solve systemic economic issues.
