“I Was Wrong”: MC Mbakara Issues Sincere Apology to Jim Iyke Following Elevator Drama Backlash

Popular Nigerian content creator MC Mbakara, whose real name is Aya Kabu, has issued a public apology to veteran Nollywood actor Jim Iyke following a wave of severe backlash over comments he made about a brief encounter with the movie star.

The controversy kicked off after Mbakara shared a video documenting an impromptu meeting with Jim Iyke in an elevator. In the clip, the skit maker and his wife approached the actor just as the elevator doors were opening. Clearly in a rush, Jim Iyke maintained his boundaries but remained polite, offering a handshake and a quick “Hi, how are you doing?” before stepping into the lift and going about his day.

However, Mbakara was deeply displeased with the brevity of the exchange. Expressing his frustration directly in the video and caption, he wrote: “What will it take for him to smile? It’s annoying. Celebrities always feeling like they are God or something.”

The commentary backfired instantly. Rather than sympathizing with the content creator, an overwhelming majority of social media users rushed to Jim Iyke’s defense. Netizens heavily criticized Mbakara for showing a sense of entitlement, pointing out that Jim Iyke was visibly pressed for time yet still showed maturity and courtesy by pausing to shake hands and acknowledge them. Many fans labeled Mbakara’s expectations unrealistic, arguing that celebrities owe no one standard performative smiles, especially when handling private or busy schedules.

Recognizing that the narrative had turned sharply against him, MC Mbakara made a swift U-turn. Taking to his official Facebook page, the comedian completely retracted his previous statements and offered an unreserved apology. “I never thought this will trend, but I am dropping my sincere apologies to Uncle Jim Iyke and everyone about this issue. I was wrong,” he wrote, effectively shutting down the escalating drama.
