INEC Opens Candidate Portal: Nine Parties Granted Access Codes to Upload Flagbearers for 2027 Polls

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has commenced the submission of its candidates’ names to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2027 general election, following a major overhaul by the National Working Committee (NWC) that reinstated the candidature of seven Ondo House of Representative members and two Senators after upholding petitions from aggrieved aspirants. A list of candidates for Senate and House of Representatives seats, contained in a June 29, 2026 letter jointly signed by the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, and National Secretary, Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, addressed to INEC Chairman Prof. Josh Amupitan, confirmed extensive substitutions across seven senatorial districts and 19 federal constituencies covering Ondo, Benue, Abia, Ebonyi, Kaduna, and Kogi states. In Ondo State, the NWC replaced Dr. Taiwo Fasoranti with Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (SAN) for Ondo Central, restored Senator Olajide Ipinsagba for Ondo North, and substituted six House of Representatives slots including restoring Hon. Donald K. Ojogo for Ilaje/Ese Odo and Hon. Dr. Oluwatimehin Adelegbe for Owo/Ose, sparking peaceful protests by aggrieved women and youths in Akure while Hon. Isaacs Kekemeke retained his Ondo South senatorial ticket. In Benue State, loyalists of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, secured key tickets over aspirants aligned with Governor Hyacinth Alia, resulting in Senator Emmanuel Memga Udende replacing Senator Gabriel Suswam in Benue North-West and Senator Titus Tartenget Zam replacing Benjamin T. Aber in Benue North-East. Other notable substitutions include Senator Sunday Karimi replacing Aro Samuel Bamidele in Kogi West, Prince Paul Ikonne taking over Abia South, and Abdulazeez Kaka securing the Kaduna North Federal Constituency ticket. Meanwhile, INEC confirmed to LEADERSHIP that it has granted portal access codes to nine political parties—including the APC, PDP, ADC, Labour Party, and the legally embattled Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC)—allowing them to upload candidate names for the offices of President, governor, senator, and House of Representatives members nationwide, effectively dismissing rumors that the NDC had been denied access while the Labour Party, under the INEC-recognized Nenadi Usman leadership, confirmed it has also actively commenced uploading its nationwide frontline list ahead of the statutory deadline.
