The Kano State Government has officially suspended all Durbar processions and horse-riding festivities within the Kano metropolis until further notice.
The sudden restriction was announced following an emergency meeting of the State Security Council at the Government House in Kano, where top officials and security chiefs reviewed intelligence reports surrounding upcoming events. According to official statements from the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, comprehensive security assessments uncovered massive mobilization by opposing supporter groups, raising severe alarms over potential violent confrontations, destruction of property, and loss of lives.
The Durbar procession, a world-famous cultural showcase featuring majestic horse riders, colorful royal regalia, and traditional music, usually draws tens of thousands of spectators and royal enthusiasts across Northern Nigeria. However, lingering chieftaincy disputes and heightened political rivalries have turned large public gatherings into high-risk flashpoints. Exercising its constitutional responsibility to preserve order, the government directed all law enforcement agencies to strictly enforce the ban and arrest anyone attempting to defy the order or disrupt public peace.
While the indefinite halt to the beloved cultural spectacle comes as a disappointment to tourists and cultural enthusiasts, state authorities maintain that taking proactive steps to avoid bloodshed remains the absolute highest priority.
