Manchester United have officially completed the signing of Belgian international midfielder Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa on a five-year contract. The Red Devils moved swiftly to trigger a £35 million release clause in the 29-year-old’s contract, wrapping up the transfer on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.
The acquisition represents a significant coup for manager Michael Carrick as he rebuilds United’s midfield following the departure of Casemiro and a severe World Cup knee injury to Manuel Ugarte.
A Statement of Ambition
Tielemans, who recently captained Belgium during their run to the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals, expressed immense pride after putting pen to paper at Old Trafford.
“It’s hard to describe just how proud I am to join Manchester United,” Tielemans said. “Signing for such a special club feels incredible… The ambition from everyone at the club is extremely clear; we are all determined to push for the biggest trophies over the coming years.”
United’s Director of Football, Jason Wilcox, hailed the Belgian’s pedigree, highlighting him as “one of the most outstanding midfielders in the Premier League in recent years”. Wilcox added that Tielemans will bring much-needed composure, creativity, and dressing-room leadership to Carrick’s squad.
Breaking the INEOS “Transfer Rule”
| Feature | Detail |
| Transfer Fee | £35 million (Release clause triggered) |
| Contract Duration | 5-Year Deal (Until June 2031) |
| Player Age | 29 (Born May 1997) |
| Previous Club | Aston Villa F.C. |
The transfer marks a notable shift in recruitment strategy under the INEOS sporting regime. Since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s group took charge of sporting operations, United had adhered to a self-imposed guideline focusing strictly on signing players under the age of 26.
However, after pulling out of a proposed deal for Atalanta’s 27-year-old midfielder Ederson due to a failed medical, United chiefs moved rapidly to secure Tielemans. His wealth of Premier League experience (244 appearances) and proven leadership qualities convinced decision-makers to waive the age cap.
Tielemans is United’s second high-profile midfield signing in the space of 48 hours, following the £50 million arrival of 22-year-old Brazilian talent Andrey Santos from Chelsea. Together, they are expected to form the engine room of a revitalized Manchester United side aiming to build on last season’s third-place finish and challenge on all fronts in both the Premier League and the Champions League.
