In a sensational administrative comeback, Liverpool Football Club has officially appointed Julian Ward as its new sporting director, bringing the 45-year-old executive back into the high-stakes transfer hot seat at Anfield.
The swift appointment follows the unexpected departure of Richard Hughes, who stepped down after the summer transfer window to join Saudi Pro League powerhouse Al-Hilal. Fenway Sports Group (FSG) president Mike Gordon led the rapid search, ultimate choosing to rehire Ward—a move designed to preserve continuity and leverage 14 years of deep operational experience within the club’s framework.
Ward previously held the sporting director mantle during the 2022–23 season, where he successfully negotiated high-profile deals for key stars including Luis Díaz, Darwin Núñez, Cody Gakpo, and Alexis Mac Allister. After briefly stepping away and subsequently taking on the role of FSG’s technical director in 2024, Ward now steps back into the primary recruitment driving seat to oversee long-term squad development, contract negotiations, and upcoming transfer windows.
