Mayorkun Sparks Debate With Comment on Responsible Women and Late-Night Outings

Nigerian Afrobeats star Mayorkun has stirred conversation on social media after sharing his thoughts on finding the right woman to marry, insisting that a responsible woman should not still be outside by 1 a.m.

The singer, whose real name is Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, made the comments during a recent appearance on the UNCUT podcast, where he opened up about his struggles to find a suitable life partner. According to Mayorkun, a conversation with his elder brother gave him a different perspective on his search for a wife.

Mayorkun said his brother asked him a simple but thought-provoking question: when was the last time he approached a woman in broad daylight? The question reportedly caught him off guard, as he admitted that he could hardly remember the last time he approached a woman during the day, estimating that it had been almost nine years.

Reflecting on the conversation, the singer questioned whether meeting women late at night was the best way to find a potential wife. He said, “You can’t be a responsible girl and still be outside by 1 a.m.,” adding that he wondered whether someone who remained outside at that hour was the kind of person he wanted to marry.

The ‘Mayor of Lagos’ crooner also recounted an awkward dating experience involving a woman who claimed she did not know him or his music. However, during their second date, she reportedly sang one of his older songs word for word when it came on the radio. The experience appeared to reinforce his concerns about pretence and people presenting themselves differently from who they really are.

Mayorkun’s remarks have opened up a wider conversation about dating standards, nightlife and what people consider important when choosing a life partner. While some may agree that lifestyle and personal habits matter when looking for a spouse, others may argue that staying out late does not automatically determine a person’s character or suitability for marriage.

As the singer continues his search for the right partner, his comments have certainly given fans plenty to discuss. Do you agree with Mayorkun, or do you believe a person’s character matters more than the time they return home?
