The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has urged students across the country to look beyond academic certificates and acquire practical skills that can improve their employability and prepare them for the demands of the modern economy. The student body emphasized that while formal education remains important, possessing a certificate alone may not be enough to secure meaningful employment or build a successful career in an increasingly competitive job market. NANS encouraged students to take advantage of opportunities to learn vocational, digital, technical and entrepreneurial skills while pursuing their academic programmes. According to the association, developing additional competencies can help graduates become more independent and better prepared to respond to changing economic conditions. The call comes amid concerns about unemployment and underemployment among young Nigerians, with many graduates facing difficulties securing jobs after completing their studies. NANS said students should therefore begin preparing for life after university by developing skills that complement their academic qualifications. Digital skills, communication, leadership, problem-solving, financial management and entrepreneurship were highlighted as areas that could provide valuable opportunities for young people. The association also encouraged students to participate in internships, professional training, workshops and other practical learning programmes that can provide real-world experience. NANS stressed that universities and other higher institutions should also strengthen partnerships with industries and organizations to expose students to practical experiences. The association believes that combining academic knowledge with relevant skills can improve graduates’ competitiveness and contribute to national development. Students were encouraged to remain proactive, innovative and willing to learn as they prepare for the future.
