NELFUND: Federal Government Disburses ₦303bn in Student Loans to 850,000 Beneficiaries

The Federal Government has disbursed about ₦303 billion in student loans to approximately 850,000 beneficiaries through the Nigeria Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, as part of efforts to improve access to tertiary education and reduce financial barriers for students. The loan programme is designed to provide financial support to eligible students who may struggle to meet the costs associated with their education, including institutional charges and other approved educational expenses. NELFUND officials said the initiative represents a major intervention in Nigeria’s education sector, particularly at a time when rising living costs and other economic pressures are making it increasingly difficult for some families to finance university, polytechnic, and other higher education programmes. The expansion of student financing is expected to help more young Nigerians remain in school and complete their studies without being forced to abandon their education because of financial difficulties. Education stakeholders have welcomed the programme, describing access to affordable student financing as an important component of efforts to improve human capital development. They, however, stressed the importance of transparent administration, efficient application processes, accurate beneficiary records, and effective monitoring to ensure that funds reach qualified students. Analysts also noted that the long-term success of the initiative will depend on sustainable funding and clear repayment arrangements that allow graduates to repay their loans without excessive financial pressure. They urged NELFUND to strengthen its digital systems and communication channels so applicants can easily obtain information about eligibility, applications, disbursements, and repayment obligations. Stakeholders further called for greater public awareness, particularly among students from disadvantaged backgrounds who may not fully understand how to access the scheme. The programme is expected to contribute to broader efforts to expand educational opportunities, improve workforce skills, and strengthen Nigeria’s human capital base. With hundreds of thousands of students already benefiting, attention is now turning to the continued expansion, accountability, and sustainability of the student loan system. Education experts said effective implementation could help reduce financial exclusion in tertiary education while giving more young Nigerians the opportunity to acquire skills needed for future employment and economic development.
