Newly Built Kugbo Bus Terminal Roof Ripped Off in Abuja Rainstorm

A fierce rainstorm yesterday afternoon, Tuesday, April 7, 2026, has caused significant structural damage to the newly constructed Kugbo Bus Terminal in Abuja, leading to chaotic scenes and a massive traffic gridlock along the Abuja–Keffi highway.

The storm, which hit the area around 3:30 PM, packed enough force to rip off the entire roof covering of the terminal, sending twisted steel beams and corrugated metal sheets flying across the dual carriageway.

The Incident and Aftermath

  • Infrastructure Failure: Despite being part of a ₦51 billion transport initiative and being commissioned just last year in June 2025, the facility suffered extensive damage before it even became fully operational.
  • Traffic Gridlock: The debris effectively turned the Kugbo section of the highway into a parking lot, with commuters stranded for up to three hours as recovery teams struggled to clear the road.
  • Scavenging: In the immediate aftermath, eyewitnesses reported seeing dozens of scavengers swarming the wreckage during the rain to cart away dislodged metal parts and fittings.

Harassment of Journalists

Tensions escalated further when news crews, including a team from TVC News, arrived to document the wreckage.

  • The Confrontation: Security personnel and officials at the site reportedly harassed the journalists, attempting to prevent them from filming the extent of the structural failure.
  • Public Outcry: This attempt to “shield” the damage from public view has sparked criticism from Nigerians on social media, with many questioning why a multi-billion naira project failed so easily and why the press was being hindered from reporting on public infrastructure.

Official Response

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has since ordered the immediate deployment of security personnel to the site to maintain order and has directed that urgent repairs be carried out. In a statement via his Senior Special Assistant, Lere Olayinka, the administration confirmed there were no fatalities or vehicle damage, though the incident has raised serious questions about construction standards and quality assurance.
