Nigeria Basketball Federation Gets New President After Heated Election

Nigeria’s basketball community has a new leader after Mustapha Abdullahi was elected president of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), but his victory has been overshadowed by protests, allegations of irregularities and a pending court case.

Abdullahi, the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, secured 40 of the 48 votes cast at Thursday’s election in Abuja. Former D’Tigers captain Olumide Oyedeji received eight votes, while former Nigerian international Ejike Ugboaja received none.

However, the election was far from smooth. Presidential aspirant Igoche Mark withdrew before the vote, citing concerns about the credibility of the process. Ugboaja also walked out after voting began, alleging that the proceedings had been hijacked in favour of Abdullahi.

The allegations have not been independently established, and the election continued despite the dispute. A separate court case challenging the legality of the NBBF elective congress remains pending, with proceedings adjourned until November 3.

The controversy has placed the federation’s leadership transition under scrutiny, even as basketball officials face pressure to focus on the development of the sport.

Abdullahi has spoken about his personal connection to basketball, recalling how his passion for the game began on grassroots courts while growing up in northern Nigeria. He has pledged to expand grassroots participation, improve facilities and strengthen domestic competitions.

Those promises come at a critical time for Nigerian basketball. The country’s national teams, particularly the women’s team D’Tigress, have enjoyed notable success, but building a stronger domestic structure remains essential to sustaining that progress.

The new president will need to address concerns about governance, funding, player development and the organisation of local competitions. Just as importantly, he will have to work towards restoring confidence among stakeholders who questioned the election process.

Winning the vote is one thing; uniting the basketball family and delivering meaningful progress will be the bigger test.

Nigerian basketball fans will be watching closely to see whether Abdullahi can turn the controversy surrounding his election into an opportunity for a fresh start.
