Nigeria Makes History as First OPEC Member to Join International Energy Agency as Associate Member

In a landmark development for global energy governance, Nigeria has officially been admitted as an associate member of the International Energy Agency (IEA), becoming the first nation from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to achieve this status. The IEA’s governing board unanimously approved Nigeria’s accession following a formal application submitted in May 2026, marking what IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol described as the fastest membership process in the agency’s 52-year history. This strategic partnership is set to deepen Nigeria’s engagement with major global energy consumers and strengthen its role in critical policy dialogues regarding energy security, market transparency, and the transition to sustainable solutions. As Africa’s most populous nation and a premier oil and gas producer, Nigeria’s inclusion expands the IEA’s network to represent over 80 percent of global energy demand. Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, hailed the move as a major boost for the nation’s industrialization goals and its efforts to expand electricity access and clean cooking solutions for millions. The collaboration will provide Nigeria with unparalleled access to global research, policy insights, and investment mobilization, supporting the government’s efforts to diversify the economy and modernize its energy infrastructure. By bridging the gap between its OPEC commitments and the IEA’s market-liberalizing focus, Nigeria is now uniquely positioned to influence international energy debates while accelerating domestic projects like decentralized solar energy and refined fuel exports to ensure regional stability and long-term national economic prosperity.
