Nigerian singer Fola has finally explained the story behind his viral photograph showing him wearing casual clothes during his final-year project defence at the University of Lagos.
The singer, whose real name is Folarin Odunlami, said he had just arrived from Canada and went directly from the airport to school because he wanted to defend his project in person.
According to Fola, he showed his lecturer his flight ticket to explain his circumstances, after which he was allowed to proceed with the academic exercise.
The photograph had previously sparked heated conversations online, with some social media users questioning whether the singer’s outfit was appropriate for such an important university assessment. Others argued that people had turned an ordinary situation into an unnecessary controversy.
His explanation has reopened the discussion, with Nigerians sharing different opinions about university dress codes, celebrity treatment and whether the situation would have attracted the same attention if the student were not a public figure.
However, there has been no official confirmation that the university found his outfit to be a dress-code violation or granted him special treatment because of his celebrity status.
For Fola, the key point is that he wanted to complete his academic responsibility himself rather than miss the opportunity after travelling internationally.
The story has once again shown how quickly a photograph can become a major online debate, especially when it involves a celebrity. It has also given fans another glimpse into the singer’s life beyond music.
