As news of the impeachment of the Lagos state speaker, Mudashiru Obasa continue to make round, the impression that the rift he had with his principal, Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu led to his impeachment has been cleared.
Yesterday, the sixth-term lawmaker, serving his third term as Speaker, was impeached, Abiodun Tobun, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Epe Constituency 1, Abiodun Tobun, noted that contrary to rumours flying around Obasa was sacked as Speaker on Monday to uphold the “sanctity” and “integrity” of the House. He added that thirty-two out of 40 lawmakers, at an emergency plenary, impeached Obasa via voice votes over alleged gross misconduct.
According to him, “The Constitution makes it clear that the House has the powers to regulate its proceedings. So, the members of the House felt that they’ve had enough of the Rt Hon Mudashiru Obasa and today, we have unanimously agreed that Rt Hon Mojisola Meranda Lasbat become the new Speaker of the House.
“So, it was a resolution concurred to by all members of the parliament and so be it. We cannot open our House and allow this parliament to dwindle. We owe our constituents a duty and we owe Lagos State a duty of ensuring that the sanctity of the House and the integrity of this House are restored.”
Meanwhile, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity Gboyega Akosile, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos added that the governor has no hand in the impeachment of Obase.
He said, “No, no, no. There is absolutely nothing true about that. I mean, no, the Governor does not have a hand in it. It was purely a legislative matter.
“The Governor is busy with serious matters, busy with taking care of the over 20 million Lagos population.
“What happened in the Hallowed Chamber of the House of Assembly was purely the prerogative of the legislators.
“I mean, we saw on the media, just like you, that the legislators removed the Speaker. We watched like every other person. The Governor must have watched it like any other person.
“I don’t think there is anything more to it other than that. So, absolutely, there is no hand of the governor in the impeachment of the Speaker,” Akosile stated.
The election of Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, as the new Speaker, made her the first female to take charge of the legislative body in the South-West state.
