“October 1 Relief?” — FG Claims CNG and EV Rollout Has Started Slashing Transport Fares

As Nigeria marks its October 1 Independence Day milestone, the Federal Government has declared that its ambitious clean energy mobility push is officially delivering relief, claiming that transport fares are already dropping across multiple states.

The Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG & EV) revealed that the widespread rollout of CNG-powered buses, electric taxis, and commercial tricycles has begun yielding measurable savings for everyday commuters. Following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s strategic directive setting October 1 as the target date for visible transportation cost reductions, officials confirmed that commercial fleets across major hubs—including Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Delta—are expanding rapidly.

According to Pi-CNG & EV leadership, reduced operational and refueling expenses for transport operators are finally trickling down to passengers. By switching from expensive petrol and diesel to significantly cheaper locally sourced natural gas and electric charging systems, participating commercial vehicle operators are seeing energy overheads plummet, translating directly into cheaper ticket prices on designated routes. Furthermore, active conversion centers and newly deployed refueling infrastructure are accelerating private sector participation.

While authorities emphasize that the fare reduction program remains an ongoing nationwide expansion rather than a one-time event, commuters across urban centers are keeping a close watch on their daily transport expenses to see if the promised relief holds steady at the park.
