The keenly contested final had seen Spain take a 2-1 lead into the break courtesy of goals from Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Oyarzabal and Nuno Mendes (for Portugal).
After the break, Cristiano Ronaldo leveled things to keep Portugal in the game which eventually stretched into penalties.

And though Ronaldo got substituted off just before extra time following an injury, and didn’t partake in the shootout, the Portuguese captain couldn’t hold back his tears as Ruben Neves scored the decisive penalty after Diogo Costa’s had saved Alvaro Morata’s kick, to bring home the trophy for a historic second time, having won it for the first time in 2019.

The build up to the game has seen the media and pundits, pit Spanish and Barcelona youngster, Lamine Yamal who had enjoyed an impressive season against Ronaldo, but it wasn’t Yamal’s night as PSG defender, Mendes, kept him at bay, limiting his impact as the 2023 winners failed to get their hands on the trophy.
