Public servants across federal, state, and local government levels have officially downed tools to commence a three-day nationwide warning strike following the expiration of the deadline given to the Federal Government.
The industrial action was ordered by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) after the government failed to satisfactorily address core demands submitted to the presidency. In an official circular signed by the council’s National Secretary, Comrade Olowoyo Gbenga, all civil servants were instructed to withdraw their services from midnight on Friday, October 2, through Sunday, October 4.
The warning strike stems from unresolved grievances surrounding mounting economic hardship, soaring fuel prices, unpaid wage award arrears, and broader welfare concerns affecting public workers and their dependents across the country. Council leadership emphasized that despite prior notices and appeals, the lack of concrete intervention from the government left organized labor with no choice but to mobilize workers nationwide.
“An injury to one is an injury to all. All workers, their dependents, and vulnerable Nigerians are groaning terribly under the present economic situation,” the council stated, calling on all members to strictly observe the strike directive.
The nationwide shutdown is expected to paralyze administrative operations across government secretariats, ministries, departments, and agencies through the weekend. Union leaders have warned that the outcome of this three-day warning action will determine the next line of action if their demands remain unaddressed.
