Rivers United Lose Unbeaten Record but Remain Top of the NPFL Table

Bendel Insurance delivered one of the standout results of the latest Nigeria Premier Football League round after defeating Rivers United 2-1 in Benin City, ending the league leaders’ unbeaten run and shaking up the early-season title conversation.

The match, played at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, remained goalless through the first half despite Rivers United goalkeeper Clinton Andy producing several important saves.

Bendel Insurance finally broke the deadlock in the 48th minute through Freeman Wuchirwe, giving the home supporters a reason to celebrate. Rivers United responded in the 73rd minute when Chijioke Mbaoma finished off a well-timed pass from Shola Oladunjoye to bring the visitors back into the contest.

Just when the match appeared to be heading towards a draw, Jonathan James struck in the 89th minute to seal all three points for Bendel Insurance. The late goal ended Rivers United’s nine-match unbeaten run and handed the visitors their first defeat of the 2026/27 NPFL campaign.

Despite the setback, Rivers United remain at the top of the table with 17 points after 10 matchdays. Rangers International and Nasarawa United are also on 17 points, making the battle for the leading positions increasingly competitive.

Elsewhere, Ikorodu City and Shooting Stars played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in a Southwest derby, while Nasarawa United defeated former champions Enyimba 1-0.

The results underline how unpredictable the NPFL can be. Rivers United will be keen to respond in their next fixture, while Bendel Insurance can take confidence from a victory that could prove significant as the season progresses.
