The digital world and legal authorities are locked in a serious conversation following a wave of resurfaced social media posts involving singer Simi. What began as “cancel culture” has evolved into an official inquiry as the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) have reportedly stepped in to investigate past allegations of misconduct linked to a daycare facility once owned by Simi’s mother.
The controversy was reignited by old tweets from Simi’s pre-fame days, which some social media users interpreted as insensitive or suggestive of inappropriate conduct regarding children at the facility. While Simi has previously addressed the backlash, the emergence of an alleged “victim” sharing their story online has prompted authorities to take a closer look. NAPTIP has indicated that the probe aims to ensure all historical claims of child safety are thoroughly vetted, regardless of when the incidents allegedly occurred.
Amidst the legal scrutiny, the crossfire has extended to Simi’s husband, Adekunle Gold (AG Baby). Media personality Do2dtun (the Energy GAD) has come out in strong defense of the “High” singer, condemning the “extreme bullying” directed at a man who was not involved in the original controversy. “It’s one thing to ask for accountability; it’s another to launch a coordinated attack on a family man and his children,” Do2dtun stated, calling the recent wave of comments “despicable” and “unproductive.”
As the investigations proceed, many in the industry are urging the public to wait for official findings from DSVA and NAPTIP rather than resorting to “trial by social media.” For Simi and Adekunle Gold, who have traditionally maintained a private and scandal-free family life, this remains one of the most challenging periods of their public careers.
