The Bold Afrobeats Musical EVI Hits Cinemas Nationwide Today

The Nigerian box office receives a significant addition today, Friday, March 27, 2026, with the nationwide theatrical release of the Afrobeats musical drama EVI. Produced by the prolific Judith Audu and directed by Uyoyou Adia, the film arrives with high expectations following a star-studded premiere at Filmhouse Cinemas in Lagos last Sunday.

The narrative follows the tumultuous journey of Evi-Oghene Donalds, a gifted but ego-driven Afrobeats star whose world collapses after her record label abruptly terminates her contract without compensation. Stripped of her fame and fortune, Evi is forced to navigate the harsh realities of the industry—moving from sold-out stages to performing in small lounges—while battling personal demons and addiction. Her path to redemption is bolstered by an unlikely partnership with a troubled former talent manager, Kola Adeloye, played by Uzor Arukwe, as they both attempt to rebuild their lives from the ground up.

While Osas Ighodaro was part of the early buzz and was spotted at the premiere supporting her colleagues, the lead role of Evi is actually played by rising talent Osas Okonyon in her feature film debut. The supporting cast is a powerhouse of Nollywood and music industry veterans, including Omowunmi Dada, Ibrahim Suleiman, Femi Branch, Tomiwa Tegbe, and gospel sensation Waje Iruobe.

A standout feature of the production is its integration of music as a core narrative tool. The film features an original 10-track soundtrack—already available on streaming platforms—with songs that serve as dialogue to express the internal struggles of the characters. Backed by Africa No Filter and the Gates Foundation, EVI is being lauded not just as entertainment, but as a poignant commentary on the systemic challenges, gatekeeping, and lack of female representation within the African music executive space.
