“They Almost Landed the Plane!” — Adekunle Gold Recounts Terrifying Mid-Flight Sickle Cell Crisis

Afrobeats sensation Adekunle Kosoko, popularly known as Adekunle Gold (AG Baby), has shared a chilling account of a major medical emergency mid-flight that left him completely unable to walk and almost forced an emergency airplane landing!

Speaking in a candid interview on BBC Radio 1Xtra, the 39-year-old music star—who has been open about living with sickle cell disease—revealed that the harrowing episode occurred while he was traveling to Tanzania with a scheduled layover in Ethiopia. The singer explained that he suddenly developed intense stomach cramps mid-air and initially assumed it was severe food poisoning from a meal eaten at the airport.

As the pain rapidly escalated, flight attendants grew deeply concerned about his worsening state. “They almost landed the plane because of me, because it was really bad,” Adekunle Gold recalled. Unlike previous sickle cell crises that primarily affected his joints, this sudden abdominal pain caught him off guard. Fortunately, the flight reached its stopover destination safely, but the singer was in such agonizing pain that medical personnel had to transfer him straight into a wheelchair to be rushed to an Ethiopian hospital.

Attending doctors later informed AG Baby that high-altitude cabin pressure combined with low oxygen levels and dehydration had triggered the severe crisis. The medical team advised the globe-trotting artist to strictly maintain high fluid intake during frequent flights. His candid story serves as a poignant reminder of the strength, resilience, and daily management required when living with sickle cell warrior status.
