Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate Peter Obi has spoken out following an attack on his convoy in Calabar, Cross River State, in an incident that has raised fresh concerns about political safety ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi reportedly confirmed that his convoy came under attack shortly after arriving in Calabar for a town hall meeting. He said stones were thrown at his supporters, while his security team reportedly warned him that some of the attackers were carrying machetes and other weapons.
The incident occurred during his visit alongside his wife, Margaret, and his political ally, Rabiu Kwankwaso.
The development has attracted attention because political campaigns are expected to intensify as the next presidential election approaches. Nigerians are increasingly concerned about whether political parties and their supporters will be able to hold rallies and public meetings without intimidation or violence.
For Obi and his supporters, the incident is another reason to demand stronger protection for political gatherings. The authorities will also face pressure to investigate what happened and ensure that those responsible are identified.
Political disagreements are part of democracy, but violence should never become a campaign strategy.
