President Bola Tinubu has begged resentful Nigerians to put off their planned nationwide protest against the high expense of living, citing lack of necessity. This is especially true for young people who are organising the demonstration.
The protest organisers received assurances from the President that he has listened to their complaints and is making a concerted effort to guarantee that all of their issues are taken seriously.
After meeting with Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, relayed the President’s request to State House media.
The President’s promise was given when yesterday’s confrontation between Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, and Mr. Bayou Onanuga, the President’s Special Advisor on Information and Strategy, took a new turn.
In a letter to Onanuga sent yesterday, Obi’s attorneys demanded N5 billion and an apology within 72 hours for calling him and his allies high treasoners for allegedly orchestrating the “EndBadGovernance protest.”
Similarly, Onanuga was threatened with N500 billion in legal action if he failed to provide proof of his participation in the next demonstration by LP chairman and former presidential candidate Professor Pat Utomi.
The minister reported that general issues regarding the nation were covered during the discussion with the President, who stated he is making every effort to guarantee that the nation’s economy is in a strong position.
He said: ‘’We discussed the issue of the country in general and Mr President has asked me to again inform Nigerians that he listens to them, especially the young people that are trying to protest.
“Mr President said he listens to them and takes what they say seriously and he is working assiduously to ensure that this country is good not just for today, but also for the future.
“The issue of the planned protest, Mr President does not see any need for that, he asked them to shelve that plan and he has asked them to await the government’s response to all their pleas, he has listened to them.’’
