President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to reviving Nigeria’s ailing refineries while criticising inefficient and wasteful operations within the petroleum sector. The President said restoring domestic refining capacity remains important to reducing the country’s dependence on imported petroleum products and strengthening energy security. For years, Nigeria has spent substantial resources importing refined petroleum products despite being one of Africa’s major crude oil producers. The government’s renewed focus on refinery rehabilitation is therefore aimed at increasing domestic production, improving fuel supply and reducing pressure on foreign exchange resources used to pay for imports. Tinubu also condemned practices that result in waste, inefficiency and poor management within the oil industry, stressing the need for greater accountability and better utilisation of the country’s petroleum resources. His position comes as Nigeria continues to implement major reforms in the downstream petroleum sector following the removal of petrol subsidies and the introduction of market-based pricing. The reforms have created significant changes in fuel prices and have increased pressure on households and businesses, making reliable domestic refining an important part of efforts to stabilise the market. Functional refineries could help reduce transportation and import-related costs while providing a more predictable supply of petroleum products. The government has therefore continued to support efforts to rehabilitate existing facilities and encourage investment in new refining capacity. Analysts have noted that successful refinery operations would also create opportunities for local employment, improve industrial activity and strengthen Nigeria’s position in the regional energy market. However, sustained production will depend on effective maintenance, reliable crude supply, transparent management and strong regulatory oversight. Tinubu’s latest comments signal the administration’s determination to ensure that Nigeria derives greater value from its crude oil resources instead of relying heavily on imported refined products.
