U-20 Women’s World Cup Draw: Nigeria Set to Battle Giants Spain and China

Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national football team, the Falconets, have been handed a formidable opening challenge at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, where they are scheduled to clash with European powerhouses Spain in their Group F opener.

The official draw ceremony, held in Łódź, Poland, locked the Falconets into what football pundits are widely calling the tournament’s “Group of Death.” Alongside reigning heavyweights Spain, Coach Moses Aduku’s side will also have to navigate tricky group fixtures against Asian giants China and tournament debutants New Caledonia. The 24-nation tournament is scheduled to run from September 5 to September 27, 2026, across four prominent Polish cities: Łódź, Katowice, Sosnowiec, and Bielsko-Biała.

The opening match against Spain carries strong undertones of an old international rivalry. Spain has traditionally been a major hurdle for the Falconets on the global stage, most notably knocking Nigeria out during a tense quarter-final battle at the 2018 edition in France. However, the Nigerian girls boast an incredibly rich history in this competition, standing as one of the few nations to have qualified for every single edition of the tournament since its inception in 2002.

The Falconets punched their ticket to Poland following a highly dramatic qualification campaign that concluded with a 3-2 aggregate victory over Malawi. After claiming a comfortable 2-0 win in the first leg in Ikenne, the team suffered a scare in the return leg in Lilongwe, falling 2-1 before a crucial, ice-cold finish from forward Oscar Precious sealed their qualification. Having finished as runners-up in both 2010 and 2014, the highly motivated Falconets will be looking to lay down an early statement against Spain as they chase their first-ever U-20 world title.
