Victor Osimhen Named Greatest Striker in Turkish Super Lig History

Victor Osimhen’s reputation in Turkey continues to grow, with former goalkeeper and respected football commentator Volkan Demirel describing the Nigerian forward as the greatest striker ever to feature in the Turkish Super Lig.

Demirel made the bold assessment following Galatasaray’s 4-1 defeat to Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League, insisting that one disappointing European result does not erase Osimhen’s individual quality or the impact he has made since arriving in Turkey.

The former goalkeeper compared Osimhen with several high-profile forwards who have played in the country, including Nicolas Anelka, Mamadou Niang, Bafétimbi Gomis, Alexander Sørloth and Mario Gómez. In his view, the Nigerian belongs in a class of his own.

It is a major compliment for Osimhen, whose combination of pace, physical strength, aerial ability and clinical finishing has made him one of Galatasaray’s most influential players.

The striker has become a favourite among supporters, bringing energy and intensity to the attack while continuing to attract attention beyond Turkey. His performances have helped reinforce his status as one of Africa’s leading forwards.

However, Demirel’s declaration is an opinion rather than an official ranking, and comparisons across different eras of Turkish football will always spark debate among fans.

The timing of the praise is also interesting. Galatasaray suffered a difficult night against Barcelona, but Osimhen’s individual reputation remains strong enough to command attention even after a heavy defeat.

For Nigerian supporters, the comments provide another reminder of the level Osimhen has reached in European football. Yet the forward and his team will know that praise must be backed up by performances, particularly when the stakes are high.

Do you agree with Demirel? Is Victor Osimhen the greatest striker to play in Turkey, or does another name deserve the crown?
