Veteran Ghanaian actor and star film icon Majid Michel has sparked a fresh conversation across West African entertainment circles after addressing the age-old debate and comparison between the Ghanaian film industry (Ghallywood) and Nigeria’s powerhouse cinema industry (Nollywood)!
Speaking candidly during a recent media interaction, the acclaimed actor described comparing the growth and commercial scale of Ghana’s movie industry to Nigeria’s as fundamentally unfair and realistic.
Majid emphasized that Nigeria’s massive population of over 200 million people gives Nollywood an extraordinary structural and commercial advantage, allowing Nigerian filmmakers to generate higher box office returns, secure larger production budgets, and sustain a thriving home market.
“Comparing the two industries is unfair,” Majid stated. “Nigeria has the sheer numbers, the audience, and the market size to drive rapid growth. In Ghana, our population is significantly smaller, which naturally limits the scale of local cinema returns regardless of how talented our filmmakers and actors are.”
He further pointed out that despite these structural challenges, Ghanaian creatives continue to produce high-quality stories and achieve remarkable success on international streaming platforms alongside their Nigerian counterparts.
Majid called on fans and industry critics to celebrate the collaborative relationship between Ghanaian and Nigerian filmmakers—which produced classic golden-era films—rather than fueling unhealthy rivalries.
The actor’s honest take has resonated with movie lovers and stakeholders across both nations, prompting discussions on how African cinema as a whole can build stronger distribution networks across borders.
