The fierce, decades-long political rivalry between Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has flared up again, with Wike issuing a fiery demand for accountability over the controversial sale of Rivers State power assets.
Speaking at a town hall meeting with elders, traditional leaders, and political stakeholders in the Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State, Wike publicly challenged his predecessor to explain what happened to the $308 million generated from the sale of state-owned gas turbine power stations during his tenure as governor.
“Amaechi sold the gas turbine power stations to Sahara Energy for $308 million. Where is the money? What did Rivers people get from it?” Wike questioned, accusing Amaechi of failing to deliver tangible projects despite serving eight years as governor and another eight years as a cabinet minister.
Wike further recalled that the transaction was thoroughly investigated and indicted by the Judicial Commission of Inquiry led by Justice George Omereji. He pointed out that Amaechi’s subsequent legal attempts to quash the commission’s findings were dismissed at the High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court.
Reiterating his stance on governance ahead of future political alignments, Wike urged voters to reject politicians whose records lack verifiable achievements, insisting that the people of Rivers State deserve full transparency regarding state resources.
