Senate Faults Buhari’s Medical Trip

The Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, has faulted President Buhari’s medical trip to the United Kingdom, saying the ruling government does not stay true to its words.
Abaribe stated this on Wednesday when he appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today. According to him, Buhari’s medical trip is not contrary to the law; however, he said the exercise breaches a moral contract that the President himself set.

In his words: “I don’t think he has done anything wrong in the eyes of the law, he has a right to seek or take care of himself medically; I think morally is where he has done everything wrong.
“This was a president that told us he would never go on any medical check-up or trip abroad and condemned the enormous amount of money spent on medical movement outside before he was elected in 2015 and shortly after he lived more abroad than in Nigeria.

“So when the COVID business started, we were assured that medical facilities in Nigeria will be upgraded and that there will be no need for so much of our monies being spent abroad.
“We are just surprised that nothing has changed he is still depending on foreign facilities than in Nigeria,” the lawmaker remarked.
The Senator further said Nigerians would have expected that the State House clinic should do medical check-up for the President and fly abroad only when he needs treatment.

It would be recalled that the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, had earlier on Tuesday said his principal had no severe condition that prompted the trip but was on a routine check-up.
“It is a medical trip, and there is no urgency, no emergency; the President is not in any sick condition.
“It is a routine medical check-up; the President has undertaken this with a set of doctors that he has retained over many years,” Shehu said.
