Buhari Task Senate on FCT CJ

The Senate has received a request from President Muhammadu Buhari seeking the confirmation of the appointment of the Acting Chief Judge of the FCT High Court, Honourable Justice Salisu Garba Abdullahi, as substantive Chief Judge.

This  was contained in a letter read during Tuesday’s plenary by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.

According to the President, the request was made pursuant to Section 256 subsection 1 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

The letter reads in part: “Request for the confirmation of the appointment of Hon. Justice Salisu Garba Abdullahi as the Chief Judge for the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory Abuja.

“Pursuant to Section 256(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

“I hereby request for the Senate’s confirmation of the appointment of Hon. Justice Salisu Garba Abdullahi, the acting Chief Judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, as substantive Chief Judge of the Court.

“I trust that the Senate will favorably confirm Hon. Justice Salisu Abdullahi as substantive Chief Judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, in the usual expeditious manner.”

It would be recalled that Garba was sworn in as acting Chief Judge of the FCT High Court on January 6th, 2021, at the supreme court of Nigeria.

His appointment followed the retirement of Justice Ishaq Bello from the position. He was sworn in by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Tanko Muhammad.

Garba, who hails from Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, was called to bar in 1984 and completed his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in 1985. in 1989, Garba was appointed as Magistrate in FCT.

He became the Chief Registrar of the FCT High Court in 1997 and served as the Chief Registrar of the FCT High Court until he was appointed a judge of the court in 1998.

Recall also that President Muhammadu Buhari had earlier asked the senate to confirm Salisu Garba as substantive chief judge of the federal capital territory (FCT) high court since he has been in acting capacity as FCT CJ after Bello’s retirement.
