PDP  Promises A Bright Future For Me Politically -Edo Deputy Governor

The new Deputy Governor of Edo State, Omobayo Godwins, has said he joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because the party promises a bright future for him politically.

Godwins was sworn in on Monday to replace Philip Shaibu who was impeached by the Edo state assembly.

The 37-year-old said he left the Labour Party to support the governorship aspiration of the PDP flag bearer for the September 21 Edo Governorship election, Asue Ighodalo.

The newly appointed deputy governor made it clear that his appointment, which came just months before Governor Godwin Obaseki’s eight-year term came to an end, was a result of political maneuvers made to help Ighodalo defeat opponents such as Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party.

Ighodalo comes from Ewohimi in the Esan South-East Local Government Area of the Edo Central Senatorial District. Godwins stated that he has grassroots support from his base in Akoko Edo, one of the local governments in the Edo North Senatorial District, to increase his chances.

Godwins claimed that since the Labour Party’s defeat in the 2023 elections for the Federal House of Representatives seat for the Akoko-Edo Federal Constituency, the party has completely transformed.

He gave the party’s members’ arguments and irreconcilable divisions as some of his justifications. Shaibu, meantime, has rejected the legislators’ attempt to impeach him, claiming it poses a threat to democracy.

From November 12, 2016, until his abrupt removal on April 8, 2024, due to a long-standing disagreement between the two erstwhile political partners, Shaibu served as Obaseki’s deputy.
