Lewandowski edge past Ronaldo and Messi to clinch the Best FIFA Men’s Award
With 55 goals in 47 games last season, goals which in no small measure contributed to Bayern Munich’s Treble success, coupled with na few other individual awards, it would have been one more wonder of the world if Bayern Munich talisman, Robert Lewandowksi did not go home with the prestigious FIFA the Best Men’s Award.
The Polish deservedly won the award given on Thursday, beating last year’s winner Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to the top prize.
This is the first time Lewandowski has won the award, with Barcelona forward Messi or Juventus’ Ronaldo usually triumphing with only Luka Modric stepping in 2018 to breach the Duo of Ronaldo and Messi’s ten years dominance.
As expected, the in-form striker who has scored 16goals in 14 games for the German giants so far this season was elated to now be rated among the Best of the Best.
“This really is something β Messi and Ronaldo have been playing at the highest level for years and now I’m rubbing shoulders with them.”
The goals poacher was humble upon receiving the award and did not fail to acknowledge his teammates and efforts over the past season.
It’s one of the awards LewanGOALski as his teammate and friend Thomas Muller now fondly calls him, will cherish for all of his footballing careers, and we look forward to seeing the players who are already hungry for more do more.
“It doesn’t matter how many titles I win, it won’t be enough. I’m already thinking about the next trophies, that’s mine and the whole team’s mentality. I hope we can celebrate the next ones with fans.”
Other winners of the night include;
Germany and Bayern Munich Keeper Manual Neuer won the Fifa the best Goal Keeper Award for exploits between the European champions’ sticks.
Manchester City defender Lucy Bronze won the best women’s player award.
Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp beat his fellow German Hansi Flick to win the converted Fifa the Best Coach Award. Having already won it last year, the German tactician became the first coach to win it twice.
Tottenham’s Son won the Pukas award for his beautiful solo goal against Aston Villa.
England and ManUtd star Marcus Rashford were awarded the first FIFA Foundation Award for his outstanding humanitarian work to combat child poverty.
Three Liverpool players made it to the Fifa Best 11.
Nominations decided winners of the various categories from national team captains and head coaches, an online ballot of fans, and 200 media representatives.
