Appeal Court Affirms Abure LP’s Chairman

Julius Abure  (LP) has been affirmed as the Chairman of the Labour Party by the Court Of Appeal in Abuja.

A cost of One million Naira was awarded by the Appellate Court in favour of Abure and against the respondent, Lamidi Apapa.

Additionally, the Appellate Court overturned the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court’s ruling from the previous year prohibiting Abure and two other individuals from representing themselves as national officers of the party.

Judge Hamma Barka’s ruling in the Appellate Court’s decision stated that the high court erred in assuming jurisdiction over the case.

Abure and two other national officers were ordered to cease presenting themselves as party leaders by Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court last year for allegedly fabricating national documents. However, the decision was overturned by the Appellate Court.

Abure’s appeal was granted because the appellate court determined that it had merit.

Abure and Apapa, who claimed the party’s chairmanship, have been embroiled in a drawn-out court battle since the 2023 presidential election, in which Peter Obi of the LP finished third.

Viral videos of Abure being physically restrained by policemen surfaced after his arrest on February 21, 2024, in Benin City, the capital of Edo State. Despite efforts by LP supporters to stop his arrest, Abure was taken into custody.

Abure was detained for attempted murder, unlawful gun possession, and other offenses, according to the police. After protests by LP members, the LP chairman was later freed on bail the next day.
