Arsenal beat Liverpool on penalties to win Community Shield

Arsenal defeated Liverpool 5-4 on penalties on Saturday to lift the Community Shield, their second trophy in a month, after the two sides played out a 1-1 draw in a rather slow encounter at an empty Wembley stadium.

Gunners captain, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave Arsenal the lead 12 minutes into the game with an absolute screamer which he dedicated to the late Black Panther star, Chadwick Boseman (may his soul rest in peace) with his iconic black panther celebration.

The FA Cup Champions maintained the lead into the break as Jurgen Klopp’s men struggled to find their rhythm. After the break, the game continued with it’s slow pace till the 73 minute when Liverpool’s Japanese substitute Takumi Minamino levelled the tie with a shot from close range, picking up his first goal in 15 appearances since arriving on Merseyside in January.

With both sides failing to break the deadlock, the game had to be decided by penalties.

Reiss Nelson, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Cedric Soares and David Luiz all scored for the Gunners, while Mohamed Salah, Fabinho, Minamino and substitute Curtis Jones all scored for the premier champions in the shootout, but youngster Rhian Brewster blasted his shot at the bar, leaving the decisive shot to Aubameyang and the arsenal front man made no mistakes as he stroke past Alison to seal the victory for the Londoners, handing them their 16th community shield trophy and a second trophy of the month weeks after lifting the FA Cup on the 1st of August.

The defeat means Liverpool has lost in two consecutive community shield finals on penalties after Manchester City beat them in 2019.

Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta has guided arsenal to winning two trophies within a of 6 months after taking charge and Arsenal fans are truly loving it.
