Gbajabiamila Bows out of House

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has resigned his membership of the 10th House to serve in his new capacity as Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu. 

Gbajabiamila presented his letter of resignation on the floor of the house which was read by the newly-sworn in speaker, Tajudeen Abbas on Wednesday.

Recall that the 5-time Reps member was inaugurated alongside his colleagues on Tuesday.

Following his resignation as the Speaker of the House, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is required to conduct a fresh election to fill the role.

After reading the content of the letter to the house, Abbas announced that the seat is vacant and that INEC is expected to conduct another election for the Surulere 1 seat 

The former Speaker subsequently took a bow before the new Speaker and the members, leaving the chamber to applause and a standing ovation from the legislators.

During his two-decade law-making career in the House, Gbajabiamila was Minority Leader, Majority Leader, and Speaker at various times.

Prior to his current position, he was reelected to represent Surulere 1 Federal Constituency in Lagos State. He was sworn in as a member of the House at the opening of the 10th National Assembly on Tuesday.
