Manchester United suffer defeat in first Europa League game
Manchester United kicked off their Europa League campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Real Sociedad in their group stage match at Old Trafford.
No music was played in the stadium around the match and both sides wore black armbands and observed a minute of silence as a mark of respect for late Queen Elizabeth II, who passed yesterday, just before the game commenced.
In his first European game aside the Champions League since 2002, Cristiano Ronaldo saw a first half header get ruled out for offside and a couple chances missed as he tried to mark a mark in the game.
Brais Mendez scored the only goal from the penalty spot after 59 minutes following a disputed handball decision against substitute Lisandro Martinez.
It was a disappointing result for Ten Hag’s side who came into the game off a four game winning streak.
Their second group game will hold next Thursday against Sheriff Tiraspol in Moldova.
